It is not uncommon for a person to not want to learn new skills for various reasons. However, if a person can overcome these barriers, they are more apt to learn them. These barriers include:

Lack of Self-Esteem

Many individuals have a lack of self-esteem, which prevents them from learning new skills. To overcome this, find someone to help you learn new skills. People will often find that once you ask someone for help in learning, they can overcome the hurdle of lack of self-esteem.

Economic Circumstances

For some people, a lack of finances may cause them to not learn a new skill.

But this can be overcome by searching on the internet for free resources. Many websites will provide guides or tutorials to learn specific skills.

You can also check with your local colleges to see if there are programs to assist those who are low-income. There could be grants or trust funds that may help those in need.  Or if you prefer to learn at home, study at home programs may be available, which are often cheaper than doing it in person.

Many will also find that volunteering is a great way to learn new skills.

Lack of Time

Lack of time is a huge barrier to learning new skills. But you can manage your time better. Prioritize what needs to be done right now, or what can be put off until later. Make a to-do list, and keep your life clear of clutter to maximize the most of your time.

If you are a procrastinator, ask yourself why you are not doing the task at hand. If there is an issue, you may find it helpful to take to colleagues or family members to find a different alternative.

You should also plan on keeping things into perspective and be calm when you are feeling overwhelmed.

Family Commitments

Family commitments are huge when it comes to learning new skills. If you have children, it may be possible to ask a family member or friend for some help for a few hours here and there so you can learn a new skill.

If you are attending college courses, you can look into childcare that the university may provide. You might even be able to find assistance with childcare through different outreach programs.
